12/20/06 Coon Alert: La Shawn Barber
In “Ghana Apologizes For Selling Out Countrymen," coonservative blogger, La Shawn Barber, scolds the Ghanaian government for recently apologizing for its role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Her tapdancing coonery rockets to astronomical heights as she absolves whites of the racism and brutality which made the American institution of slavery different from any other.
“[W]hite people have apologized for slavery ad nauseam and bent over backwards to make up for it," Barber argues, demonstrating how out of touch with black Americans she has become. Whites today are more likely to disassociate themselves with (than apologize for) the atrocities perpetrated by their ancestors. Additionally, to date, no Western government has issued an official apology for its own complicity in the slave trade. In her self-loathing coonery, Barber downplays and scoffs at the attempt made by a legitimately democratic, African government to improve the damaged relationship between black Americans and black Africans.
La Shawn Barber even thanks the oppressors of her ancestors for the Middle Passage, which, according to her, has allowed black Americans to “prosper in ways they never could have in Africa or anywhere else on the planet," presuming to have knowledge of history’s what ifs. Where would the children of the diaspora be had they never been forcefully removed from their homeland? According to Barber, worse off than they are now. Black Americans, especially, should express nothing but gratitude for being rescued from the shit continent that is Africa today.
To top it off, she’s arrogant. Barber prefaces her column by calling it her “unpopular but right-on-the-money opinion." Way to go, La Shawn Barber! For your unapologetic defense of American slavery, you have earned the Coon of the Week Award.
